Charoite is a rare and captivating purple gemstone originating from the Aldan Shield in the Sakha Republic of Siberia, Russia. It is a metamorphic rock formed through contact metamorphism, where limestone deposits are altered by syenite from the Murun Massif at temperatures between 200–250°C. Named after the nearby Chara River, Charoite's name may also derive from the Russian word "chary," meaning "charm" or "magic." This enchanting stone features striking purple hues and intricate swirling patterns, making it highly sought after. Charoite is relatively delicate and susceptible to damage from strong acids, requiring careful handling. Mined by hand in a remote area nearly 600 miles from the nearest road, its extraction is labor-intensive. Additionally, the Republic of Sakha imposes a limit of 100 tons per year on Charoite mining, making it a truly precious and limited resource.
