Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson was born in Gallup, New Mexico, and raised in Pindale, NM. He graduated from Gallup High School in 1986. Robert’s journey as a silversmith began at the age of 14 or 15, when he started working as a buffer for his parents' handmade sterling silver beads. During the summer of 1986, he crossed paths with the late Kirk Smith, who became a significant mentor to him. Under Kirk's guidance, Robert learned the art of traditional Navajo stamping, mastering techniques for creating pieces with antique finishes, as well as high-polish bracelets, earrings, concho belts, rings, and squash blossoms.

Robert recalls this period as an exhilarating time in his life, filled with artistic discovery and growth. As he progressed, he began to develop his own distinctive styles of Navajo jewelry, which are now well recognized and highly sought after throughout the Southwest.

Sonoran Turquoise: Mexico

Sonoran turquoise, mined from the Campitos Mountain near Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. This region produces several distinctive types, including Sonoran Gold, known for its vibrant colors like aqua blue, lime, and two-tone blue and green with a golden-brown matrix; Sonoran Rose, a natural bright blue turquoise; and Sonoran Blue, valued for its hardness, shiny pyrite flakes, and black oxide veins.

Understanding Our Measurements

The 'end to end' length listed for Squash Blossom necklaces is measured from clasp to hook and does not include the 'drop' of the Naja. For a more accurate length reference, model photos are provided. Additionally, Naja measurements are also included to give a complete view of the necklace's dimensions.

Am I Buying Authentic Native Jewelry?

We prioritize honesty and transparency regarding the origin of our jewelry. Each piece on our site includes a detailed description, and if an item is not native-made, we clearly indicate that. While we do offer a small selection of imported jewelry, we do not support the importation of pieces that replicate original native designs.
