Eula Wylie
Navajo silversmith Eula Wylie hails from Ganado, Arizona, located on the Navajo Reservation. She is renowned for her exquisite use of Sonoran Beauty Turquoise clusters, elegantly wrapped in delicate twist wire designs and set against a backdrop of oxidized sterling silver. Eula previously crafted jewelry for Atkins Trading Company.
Sonoran Beauty Turquoise, sourced from Mexico, is categorized as "stabilized turquoise." This stabilization process involves subjecting the stone to high temperatures and allowing it to dry, which removes excess moisture and enables the application of a hardening agent.
Twisted wire metalworking is an ancient technique embraced by many Southwestern tribes, evident in both vintage and contemporary pieces. Additionally, sterling silver "raindrops" are a common traditional design element in Native American jewelry, varying from smooth and highly polished to star-like and oxidized. Oxidized sterling silver undergoes a surface treatment that darkens the metal, giving it a tarnished appearance, often used to create contrast in jewelry designs.
Spiny Oyster:
Spiny Oyster is a vibrant shell material commonly found in orange, red, and purple hues, with rare yellow variations. The colors are influenced by the mollusks' diet and the water's depth and temperature. It can be distinguished from coral by the white variations in its shell. Predominantly sourced from the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California), Spiny Oyster is used extensively in Native American jewelry. Read More
