Monty Claw

Monty Claw is an award-winning Navajo artist celebrated for his exquisite tufa cast fine sterling silver jewelry. He lives in Gallup, New Mexico, with his family and daughters, and is also recognized for his exceptional skills in beadwork and painting. Monty’s artistic journey began at the young age of five. After graduating high school in 1995 with an achievement award in art, he attended the Institute of American Indian Art, a prestigious school dedicated to Native American arts education. However, he left the program in 1998 and spent seven years working as a welder in the construction industry.

In 2001, Monty met his wife, Karen, and they married the following year. The birth of their first child reignited his passion for art, helping him emerge from a creative slump. Reconnecting with his father's legacy in beadwork, Monty began to explore this medium, crafting bead-decorated fans, rattles, staffs, and cedar bags used in Native American Church ceremonies. His beaded fans have been featured in nine different museums.

By 2006, Monty shifted his focus back to his artwork, winning an award at the Southwest Indian Arts Fair in Tucson for one of his beaded fans. This success inspired him to delve into jewelry making, leading to the prestigious 2014 Native Peoples Magazine Creativity Award at the Santa Fe Indian Market. While it may appear that Monty’s success came overnight, it is the result of a decade-long commitment to his craft. Since leaving his job in 2005 to pursue his artistic endeavors full-time, his career has flourished, earning him recognition in the art community and inspiring many with his dedication and creativity.
