Bisbee Turquoise
Bisbee turquoise is indeed one of the most sought-after and rare types of turquoise, known for its striking deep blue color and high quality. It originates from the Bisbee turquoise mine in Arizona, which is part of the historic Lavender Bisbee Copper Mine. The turquoise from this mine is distinguished by its hard, finely webbed structure and unique matrix, which ranges from brown to a deep reddish-brown. This matrix creates characteristic wisps or veils within the stone, often referred to as “smokey Bisbee.”
What makes Bisbee turquoise particularly unique is that it can be found at depths of up to 900 feet, whereas most turquoise deposits are found at much shallower depths. The Bisbee mine was closed in the 1960s, and the Phelps Dodge Mining Company subsequently restricted access to the site and buried the turquoise pit in 2004 due to safety concerns.
Since the mine's closure, collectors and enthusiasts have sought out remnants from the tailings, leading to some Bisbee turquoise still being available on the market today. However, all Bisbee turquoise currently for sale was mined before 1970, as no new material can be extracted. Annual visits to the dumps for rock hunting are permitted, allowing enthusiasts a rare opportunity to search for remnants of this iconic turquoise. Its limited availability and exceptional beauty contribute to its high value among collectors and jewelry makers.
