Morenci Turquoise
The Morenci turquoise mine, located in southeastern Arizona, is renowned for producing some of the most distinctive turquoise in the market. Its colors range from light to bright blue, often characterized by an unusual matrix of irregular quartz and pyrite, which, when polished, can resemble silver. Additionally, a variation known as “Morenci red matrix” features a brownish matrix that adds to the stone’s uniqueness.
Morenci turquoise was one of the first American turquoises to gain popularity and has since become highly valued and difficult to find. Unfortunately, the mine is now closed and buried under tons of rock, making any future mining impossible. The site was heavily leached with chemicals, further diminishing the likelihood of uncovering any remaining turquoise.
Despite the mine's closure, former miners still possess a considerable stash of rough Morenci turquoise, allowing for a limited annual release of the stone to the market. This controlled availability helps maintain interest in Morenci turquoise, keeping it accessible to collectors and artisans who appreciate its beauty and historical significance.
